The bogus clan reconciliation conference that was concluded in Mogadishu last month produced zilch results when taken into account the huge resources and efforts invested by the international donors. From the outset, major donors of the conference envisaged that the twice delayed clan conference would not yield positive outcome due to its ambiguity and flaws with respect to the framework for the reconciliation as well as the parties to be reconciled, yet the donors, mainly EU countries decide to fund the conference after they were pressured by the USA. However, in private many of the donor countries resisted funding such sham clan reconciliation; because conceptually they knew for a genuine reconciliation to take place the adversaries of the conflict should be brought to the negotiation table. Asmara Gathering: “If the TFG negotiates with this rebel group,

it would set a uniquely immoral precedent by rewarding bad behavior”

 


The Asmara gatherings had all the fanfares of a political confab; the hotels, the number of the conference attendees, the political rhetoric emanating from leading figures, delivered with the solemnity of a religious sermon, not to mention the flag waving and chest thumbing of the attendees who have wrapped themselves with the Somali flag; A good party, yes, but below the radar, it is obvious that this gathering has already ended up in an abysmal failure for several reasons. Who really benefits from a weak Somalia?

April 17, 2006 — Balkanization refers to the division of a place or country into several small political units, often unfriendly to one another. The term balkanization comes from the name of the Balkan Peninsula, which was divided into several small nations in the early twentieth century.

Somalia fits the above description as a place inhabited by one race that shared a lot of the ingredients for the formation of a country. We can compare it to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia that was united by King Abdul Aziz Bin Saud to become a modern state. Somali recorded history documents two similar unsuccessful attempts to get united as a country under one leadership. Both attempts were frustrated by foreign powers. Read the rest of this entry »
