ADDIS ABABA (AFP) — Somali Prime Minister Ali Mohamed Gedi on Friday expressed concern over escalating tension between breakaway regions of Somaliland and Puntland and called for talks to avert further bloodletting.

The dispute over two small territories on the border erupted Monday into its worst fighting in years, killing as many as 20 people and wounding several others, with combat focusing on the region of Sool. Read the rest of this entry »

Aussie-quoted Range Resources, with interests in troubled Somalia’s semi-autonomous Puntland zone, joins AIM on Monday.

Chaired by former Ashanti Goldfields boss and UraMin chairman Sir Sam Jonah, Range has focused its attention on Puntland since a deal in 2005 between managing director Michael Povey and a little-known Maldives-registered group Consort Private over extensive oil and gas and mineral rights in the area. RFC Group is nominated adviser and Fox Davies Capital broker to Range, whose shares trade at around 26p Down Under and could sport a value of some £40 million after the listing. The battle for the Muslim vote on Thursday took centre stage when ODM presidential candidate Raila Odinga accused the Government of failing to protect the rights of Muslims.

Mr Odinga, in an open letter to President Kibaki, took issue with the President’s assertion last week that he did not know the names of the deported Kenyan Muslims.

ADDIS ABABA (Reuters) – Ethiopia has agreed to work with the United Nations in delivering humanitarian aid to its Ogaden region, where a crackdown on rebels had impeded the flow of supplies, the United Nations said on Thursday.The U.N. and Ethiopia’s disaster preparedness agency will soon establish joint centres in the worst affected areas of the arid, ethnic Somali region to facilitate shipments of food, medicine and veterinary support, the U.N. said.
