Somali PM urges dialogue between feuding breakaway states

ADDIS ABABA (AFP) — Somali Prime Minister Ali Mohamed Gedi on Friday expressed concern over escalating tension between breakaway regions of Somaliland and Puntland and called for talks to avert further bloodletting.

The dispute over two small territories on the border erupted Monday into its worst fighting in years, killing as many as 20 people and wounding several others, with combat focusing on the region of Sool.

Ethiopia to ease Ogaden aid delivery – UN

ADDIS ABABA (Reuters) – Ethiopia has agreed to work with the United Nations in delivering humanitarian aid to its Ogaden region, where a crackdown on rebels had impeded the flow of supplies, the United Nations said on Thursday.The U.N. and Ethiopia’s disaster preparedness agency will soon establish joint centres in the worst affected areas of the arid, ethnic Somali region to facilitate shipments of food, medicine and veterinary support, the U.N. said.
